The Jazz Appreciation Thread

Good stuff. Here's some more:

and...

...love his version of that tune.

Another fave from T Monk:

The great Sonny Rollins:

More from Dave Brubeck:

And this is such a great little tune I'm sure you all know:

Lots of sax (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Here's another one of my favorite jazz saxophonists - David Sanborn. (Note: I'm not sure if this is jazz - this is his band doing a cover of Al Green's soul classic.)

Thread needs more Miles and Coltrane. Just my opinion.
Long-time Coltrane fans will know about pianist McCoy Tyner.

This piece, Fly With The Wind, also features a phenomenal performance by drummer Billy Cobham.

Hard not to love.

So very very good, too. (Someone mentioned fusion)

I'm a big fan of Weather Report, Billy Cobham and Pat Metheny, so I'm glad they all get a mention here. Billy Cobham is a complete master. The greatest drummer in the history of mankind.

I enjoy jazz, but my tastes run more towards something recognizable as music-- as in contains some sort of melody than the atonal noodlings of somebody like Sun Ra.

Nothing is better than a basic acoustic jazz combo with drums, stand-up bass, piano and trumpet. Vocals are also acceptable in my world.

Here's clip of Billy Cobham in action. He starts soloing about 24 seconds in. Power, subtlety, technical chops combined with nuance. The best.

Here's something you might like, Hawg. All of the elements you cite, except it swaps out the trumpet for a flute.

Don't know if this is Jazz or not, but it was recorded a blues and jazz fest. I like it.
